Bristol people living around Gloucester Road now have a genuine French patisserie and ‘salon de thé’ on their doorstep, in the shape of new business L’artisan.
Owners Salima and Mohamed Garti, who came to Bristol from Lyon in France, make and sell fresh hand-made French petit fours, cakes, and pastries every day.
L’artisan’s doors opened in August this year, and the patisserie is proving a winner with customers who visit the shop especially to buy mouth-watering tarts, eclairs, custard slices, and sponge cakes.
Trained by master bakers in Lyon and London, chef Mohamed bakes all the products from top ingredients each day, from scratch.
“I start work very early, you might say it’s the middle of the night! Everything I make is typically French, made fresh daily.”
“The streets close to the shop are full of family homes, and that is reflected in our customers. We’ve been making birthday and wedding cakes for these families, which is a lovely way of getting to know people.”
Salima and Mohammed hope that they are giving people in Bristol something different from faceless coffee chains and nondescript high street cafes, that can be found on many local city streets.
