TweetBristol photographer Brett Symes gives you five easy tips to help you improve your family photography
1. Background
While you’re focusing on capturing that moment its easy to ignore what’s going to end up in the background of the photo. All too easily a lovely image is spoilt by the washing hanging up in the background or Ian Beale on the TV in the corner. Try and keep the background simple and uncluttered
2. Lighting
You don’t need expensive studio lighting to create a beautifully lit shot, a large window can create a beautiful flattering soft light. Try to have the light source coming in from one side rather than directly behind you, this will give your subject more shape. Sometimes break the rules of lighting and shoot into the light, the results, if you’re lucky, can often be stunning.
3. Eyes
When photographing people, it’s primarily the eyes of the subject that we engage with and pull us into the photo. Get the light to reflect in the subject’s eye, this is called a ‘catch-light’ and adds that sparkle to the eyes that make them dance.
4. Time of day
If you are taking pictures outdoors try to avoid midday sun. The sun at this time is hard and the light can be very unforgiving and unflattering. If you can’t change the time try and move into the shade for better results.
5. Catch the moment
All great portrait photography is about capturing the moment, its far better to have caught the moment, albeit imperfectly, than to have missed it. Keep your batteries charged, your camera on and plenty of space on your memory card. Take lots of pictures, the best and quickest way to improve your photography is to edit your pictures heavily
