American burlesque performer Dita von Teese will dance at Bristol’s City Museum & Art Gallery next month.
The celebrated international entertainer will be performing at a private show to launch an exhibition of modern American art at the museum. From May 15th to August 22nd, the venue is playing host to Art From The New World.
Although Dita von Teese’s art has been performed at museum spaces across the world, and has been ‘carefully considered’ by Bristol City Council for its suitability, the BBC website reports that there has been some criticism of the forthcoming event.
Brenda Weston, of the equality charity Equality South West told the website,‘it actually demeans the whole of womenkind that this kind of entertainment is being supported by a public building.’
The Art From The New World exhibition will feature 47 works by a range of US artists and celebrates the new American scene, with most of the ground floor of the museum set to be taken up.
Among the exhibits will be a 15ft tall "ice cream cone" balloon sculpture by street artist Buff Monster, who will be at Bristol Museum doing a live painting on selected walls ahead of the event.
