Bristol attractions review: Bristol Zoo

14 March 2010

Description:

Rhys Bevan walks with the animals and talks with the animals as he reviews the attractions of Bristol Zoo

Rhiannon and I decided to start off on the quieter route around Bristol Zoo, taking the path leading towards the Butterfly House first and working our way around the outskirts of the Zoo before tackling the rest. It was great to see some of the animals in peace without the need to battle through crowds just to catch a glimpse.

Despite the early morning sun, rain started to set in when we were half way round. This didn’t dampen our spirits though, and we watched the playful seals show off their bellies to an admiring crowd, in particular the children who found their behaviour hilarious. Although the underwater corridor was closed on the day, we still thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Penguin and Seal section of the zoo.

Zooropia is an exciting new addition to Bristol Zoo. It’s an aerial adventure course that upon first glance seems all-to-easy. It turned out to be tricky though, made increasingly more difficult for me by a 10-year old girl behind me who seemed intent on laughing at my attempts to complete each section. She had obviously done this sort of thing before! Even so it was great fun, and the panoramic views of the Zoo that you get are a great plus for the course.

Another recent addition is Explorer’s Creek which features three areas – a water play area, a tropical bird house and a parrot feeding area, ‘Feed the Lorikeets’. This involved holding our arms out to allow small Rainbow Lorikeets to fly down and perch on our arms. The Lorikeets needed no persuasion to take the opportunity for a feed. Much to my amusement, Rhiannon had several birds squabbling over her. It was really great to interact first hand with the Lorikeets and you take much more out of the experience than just watching animals in enclosures.

It’s great to see a popular Bristol institution like the zoo isn’t just resting on its laurels, and the new attractions ensure that Bristol Zoo remains a great day out for visitors of all ages.
