Decision on Bristol International Airport expansion delayed

05 March 2010

Description:

A decision regarding whether or not Bristol International Airport will be expanded has been delayed.

Although the £150 million development plans moved a step closer to reality, a definitive answer was not provided, the Bristol Evening Post reports.

The hub - which served a total of 322,396 passengers in January this year - intends to grow in size.

Those behind the proposals claim the move would create an additional 3,000 jobs and would boost the local economy by around £200 million a year.

North Somerset Council's south area planning committee recommended the plans but did not give a final decision.

Councillor Tom Leimdorfer remarked: "It is not about whether we are for or against the airport, but this debate is about a very large expansion."

Meanwhile, the airport's chief executive Robert Sinclair said that the increase in passenger numbers last month showed that the site is not adequately equipped to meet demand.
