Rudy Millard offers advice on how to find a good Bristol hypnotherapist

In today’s fast paced world, stress is easy to come by. If we become too stressed out by modern living we can become anxious, and if we become anxious it’s easy to become ill. At the very least we can start to behave in ways that find inappropriate, or we just don’t like. Alternative therapy in Bristol can often provide a way to get back to a state of normal, natural health.

Symptoms of a stressful lifestyle can be as simple as having problems sleeping or concentrating. They can also be more serious, such as panic attacks or irritable bowel syndrome. Whatever symptoms you seem to be suffering from, if you’ve seen your GP and he or she doesn’t seem to be able to help, there is a good chance that a Bristol hypnotherapist can help you to find a solution.

Many people in Bristol will be familiar with hypnotherapy as an effective method of aiding smoking cessation, but there are a remarkable number of ailments and unwanted habits that a good hypnotherapist can help you with. But what is a good hypnotherapist, and how do you set about finding one in Bristol? Here are a few suggestions about where to look and who to look for.

The first thing to do is visit the website of a recognised professional organisation. Hypnotherapy is currently unregulated by the government, but there are a number of professional organisations that make sure that their members are properly trained, qualified and insured, as well as undergoing regular supervision. Try visiting the websites of the Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, the Hypnotherapy Society or the National Council for Hypnotherapy. They will list hypnotherapists in and around Bristol.

If you feel comfortable doing so, ask around your family and friends to see if they have any recommendations. A good therapist will be busy, and get around 70% of their clients from referrals. If someone you know has been happy with their work, it’s a good sign that they could be right for you.

When you have found a hypnotherapist in Bristol or an area that’s convenient for you, give them a call. Most therapists will not discuss your problem in too much detail over the phone, but they will take some initial details and offer to send you some information about their services, or direct you to their website.

Unless you want help stopping smoking which can generally be achieved in one session, a good therapist will offer a free initial consultation. This is an important session for both you and the therapist, as it allows time to discuss the problem that you have and to explain how hypnotherapy can help you to achieve your desired results. The hypnotherapist will also give you a good indication of the number of sessions you will need, and how much they charge.

It’s also important for you as the client to decide if you like the therapist. If you don’t get a good feeling of rapport with the hypnotherapist, or you don’t feel comfortable with them, it’s unlikely that they will be able to help you. Don’t feel embarrassed about choosing to see another hypnotherapist, and don’t be offended or worried if the therapist refers you to someone else. A good therapist will always recommend another therapist if they feel that they do not have the right skills to help you with your particular problem.
