Bristol University student's outreach project nets award

25 November 2009

Description:

A student has been issued the Inspire Bristol 2009 Enterprise and Innovation Award for an outreach programme he has piloted.

James Ashton-Bell, who is completing a course in politics at the University of Bristol, is responsible for managing and developing the Student Community Action Group Primary Schools Project.

The initiative sees volunteers who are aspiring to do PGCEs visit schools to help children who are at risk of being left behind with reading, writing and numeracy skills.

Initially involving a small number of volunteers and three schools, the scheme now encompasses over 100 helpers and more than 30 educational institutions.

Mr Ashton-Bell is also hoping to launch a pilot of the project in the University of the West of England, which has campuses in a range of areas, including Coldharbour Lane and Oldbury Court Road.

Commenting on being issued the accolade, he said: "I feel very honoured to have been given this award. The project aims to prevent children from being left behind at that crucial primary stage and has proved to be a great success."
