Toby Prior makes sure Bristol students see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil...
I have no doubt that most of you did something for Halloween, it's always been a favourite for Bristol's student population. Whether it was going out dressed as a werewolf or simply staying in and watching a gruesome DVD with some friends, I hope you had a good one. The costumes out on Park Street this year were fantastic! Good effort those of you who dressed up. But after last week's spooky shenanigans, I think we'd all agree it's time to put that zombie costume back under the bed for another year and do something a little different this week! As always, I'm here to help you out with my guide to the week for students in Bristol.
See this Week
So much to suggest this week in terms of what to go and see! I'm going to start off with the obvious one. It's Guy Fawkes Night on the 5th of November in case any of you have forgotten. There are displays all over town - for a full guide click here. There's a good one going on at the Bristol Zoo but you need a ticket. I suggest you have a lookout for posters near where you live as there is bound to be a local one.
Some of you may be aware that Christmas is sneaking up on us fast! If you're low on funds as most Bristol Students are, then why not have a look in Saint Nicholas's Market on Corn Street. It's full of little stands with smaller, more affordable gift ideas; it also has the advantage of having quite a bohemian style to it which makes it a good place to find gifts for student friends. I do most my shopping there and always manage to keep to a tight budget. The Chilli sauce stand is a personal favourite. Also there a number of good little places to eat in that market, nice for when you finally stop browsing the obscure rows of weirdly intriguing shops.
On a less seasonal note, if you're looking for something intellectual to do, go have a look in the Arnolfini on the water front in the city centre. It's one of Europe's leading centres for contemporary art, and whenever I mention it to my Bristol student friends it seems to draw a blank. From film screenings, art exhibitions and concerts to their fantastic food and arty bookshop, the Arnolfini is a sure fire winner when it comes to finding something to go see. Have a look at their website for full event listings http://www.arnolfini.org.uk/
For those rare students in Bristol with money to spare, get up to Clifton and try the food at the Prosecco restaurant. Gordon Ramsay recommended it, don't you know. Whether or not that is a reason to go is a matter of personal opinion, but at the very least it'll make a few students in Bristol curious enough to try it out.
Hear This Week
Nothing else came close to my number one this week. It's UGLY DUCKLING & Catraz at the Metropolis in Stokes's Croft on the 10th of November. Get your tickets and go! It'll be a good one. It's £10 a head but those of you who know Metropolis will vouch for the atmosphere, its small but it has fantastic acoustics and you're right up close to the performers. UGLY DUCKLING are a group of three DJ/MC's namely Einstein, Dizzy and Andy. They'll be playing from 7:30 to 11:30. Not a long night but its quality not quantity you get out of this gig.
Guide2Bristol are big fans of Catraz, perhaps one of the best musicians to come from the current Bristol music scene. He's listed on this gig as support, so hopefully he'll play new track Knock Knock at some point. Check it out on Youtube. A night of turntables, live mixing, hip-hop and dance music from some of the best Bristol has to offer. And when it's finished, you can wander down to one of the Croft's many pubs and clubs.
If you're looking for something a little more commercial though and just fancy a dance, Syndicate just sent me one of their promotional texts. X Factor's Kandy Rain are performing there on the 7th of November. Syndicate's always a good night out and if you're a big X Factor fan it's definitely worth a look. It looks like they may be trying to get all the unsuccessful acts to Syndicate in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for fliers! If they ever get the twins to perform I think I may have to go just to laugh.
Speak of the week
Apparently the majority of students, including those in Bristol, do little or no exercise during the week. Recent research has revealed that only 30% of students over the age of 18 do more than 30mins of exercise each week. The new findings conclude we need to act to stop this 'ticking obesity time bomb'.
Now I know students are stereotypically lazy, and to be honest I don't do that much exercise apart from walking into university. But I really don't think we're about to fall victim to an obesity epidemic. I mean come on - most Bristol Students can't afford enough food to get nicely plump!
Nonetheless if you're thinking about making a lifestyle change, you do have those New Year resolutions coming up. Something to think about, perhaps? Have a good week!
