Toby Prior makes sure Bristol students see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil...
The first couple of weeks of term have passed. Fresher's flu is flattening hordes of Bristol students like blades of grass in the wind. And the realisation that you may have to do some work to pass that module is sinking in. But thankfully, this week, there is plenty of entertainment to turn those frowns upside-down. I'll be bringing you a weekly guide for students in Bristol. From now on you can expect something to see, hear and talk about during the week.
See this Week
Looking for something to do on your day off? Helping you get out the house this week is Cinema De Lux in Cabot Circus. I know many of you will be saying "I can't afford it, it's way overpriced in there". Use your NUS cards! It's £5 for a Bristol student which isn't bad, especially if you buy your snacks outside the cinema and bring them in. It certainly saves buying the legendary £3 bottles of coke and £5 popcorn. There are a lot of good films on at the moment, like Neill Blomkamp's ‘District 9'. Worth a watch even if you're not a sci fi fan, it's a very clever and well made film, if slightly stressful and hard hitting.
If you're looking for something lighter there's always Ricky Gervais' ‘Invention of Lying'. A very funny film, definitely one for Gervais fans as it's full of his usual humour.
Hear This Week
Heading the bill this week is the funky ‘LAB' bar. Formally ‘ARC' bar this legendary venue packs quite a musical punch. Hidden away on Broad Street in the city centre, you'd be forgiven for not knowing it even existed. But if you're a Bristol student, there is no excuse! You should know about this place. Its cool glass bottle style entrance gives it a unique feel right from the point of entry. The venue is small but still manages to pack in two floors and a live performance stage. Famed for its unique interior, you'll certainly appreciate the work they put into making the LAB look good.
This Friday (09/10/09), the LAB hosts "Penguin Dance". A night of Fidgit House, Bassline House, Breaks, Drum and Bass, Hip-Hop, UK Garage and Dubstep featuring big names on the Bristol circuit. MC's Caresel and Ram introduce a host of DJs. £7 on the door and plenty of drinks deals, you can't lose with this one. LAB is currently licensed until 3am so defiantly worth a visit this week.
If you're looking for something bigger this weekend then why not check out Syndicate. A classic super club with two huge floors and plenty of bars, you're always in for a good night. It's DJ SPOONY from BBC Radio 1 this Saturday, a guaranteed winner with all the best recent tunes from the charts.
Speak of the week
With the constant doom and gloom of top up fees and everyone telling us how hopeless it's going to be trying to find jobs after we graduate, it's nice to read something slightly different in university news. This week's topic is Birmingham Metropolitan College's lecturers fashion sense, or rather lack of it according to their bosses. Their union has been protesting about how they have been told they look "scruffy". And while the university claims the lecturers' dress sense "undermines the professionalism of the staff", the teachers remain defiant with the response "we're not bank managers". Nice to know it's not just us students in Bristol having a hard time!
