Description:
Avant-rock supergroup Githead comes to Arnolfini on 29 October. They are Colin Newman of seminal art punk group Wire, Robin Rimbaud, better known as visionary sound artist Scanner, and Malka Spigel from Minimal Compact. As individuals, their work has traversed experimental terrain between performance, installation, photography, music and visual art. Since forming Githead in 2004, they have produced two albums, showcasing their distinct take on space-rock, electro-pop, punk, dub and the avant-garde, yet always imbued with a cyclic, hypnotic funkiness.
This special ‘Gitart' event will involve each Githead member presenting their own visionary work that has slipped between the borders of performance, installation, photography, music and art, followed by an in-conversation with writer, DJ and musician Mike Barnes. A rare UK live appearance of the band will follow the presentation.
The band's genesis in 2004 was a proverbial 'one off' as part of the celebrations of Swim records 10th anniversary, but it quickly became apparent that the band was more than a mere collection of individuals and that it was able to generate its own style.
Since the autumn of 2005 the band have been concentrating on writing and recording their 2nd album Art Pop which is viewed as the band's most fully realised work to date. Released in 2007 it has received excellent reviews
Andy Gill writing in the Independent said;
‘Newman seems to have relocated the combination of sardonic intellectual wit and winning pop song craft that made Wire such an engaging (and influential) post punk prospect.' 5 Stars
‘Simultaneously brooding, lush, aggressive and lyrical, this is a reclamation of pop and rock music at their most atmospheric and beguiling.' Michael Bracewell WIRE magazine
This Arnolfini event is presented with Elena Hill and is part of Contemporary Art Programming's continued exploration of Staging Sound.
