Composer Philip Glass to perform at St Georges Bristol
St Georges Bristol has announced that the internationally renowned composer Philip Glass will perform at the venue on Tuesday 14 May 2013.
Philip Glass will make his first visit to Bristol in May for a solo performance at St Georges as part of the venue’s FILMIC series, presented in association with the Watershed. The programme, entitled Etudes and Other Work for Solo Piano, will feature Glass’s trademark sound, heard in films such as The Hours, Koyaanisqatsi and Candyman.
The composer, whose music includes symphonies, operas, chamber works and film scores, first rose to fame in the 1970s. Now aged 75 he is still composing and performs in concerts around the world. His appearance at St Georges promises to be a highlight of the venue’s new season of live music events.
The FILMIC series begins in March and will include screenings, a talk and a concert of Glass’ string quartets.
The season, which runs from January to May, also includes performances from Julian Lloyd Webber; US blue grass trio The Be Good Tanyas; Mongolian throat singers Anda Union; and local musicians Phantom Limb. A host of classical stars will appear throughout March as part of the inaugural Bristol Baroque Festival, presented in association with BBC Radio 3 and featuring a week of live broadcasts from the Great George Street venue.
