Description:
The Thornbury summer carnival is returning for the first time in 14 years, and attendees on 4th July look set to enjoy an unparalleled day of festivities both on and off the ground.
As well as a display by the Red Arrows at 5PM, a Spitfire piloted by Air Chief Marshal Sir John Allison will make a fly past at 4.15PM. Sir John is a former leader of the Red Arrows, who will be led on Saturday by Wing Commander Jason Hawker. Hawker has links to the area, as he was a former pupil at the Castle School in Thornbury, and his family still live locally. There will also be 20 hot air balloons flying over the town from 8.30PM.
Carnival Chairman Dave Goldring said, ‘It's great to see so many entertainments coming together for the carnival. We have over fifty entries for the parade. This will be the result of over eighteen months of planning, and already there is interest from people and businesses who want to get involved next year. We are grateful to Aldi who donated £5000 to this year's carnival fund, they enabled us to book the Band of the Light Cavalry who performed in Thornbury on the Armed Services Day. The Band will lead the Procession, and play on stage during the afternoon. Oldbury Power Station also helped us out by donating £3,500. In total, the day's events are costing £20,000, which has been generated through business donations and advertising sales.'
There will be many other entertainments on offer during the day, including Indian dancers, Punch and Judy, choirs and a display of classic Bristol cars. There will also be a WW2 Sherman tank in attendance.
