Description:
Hip-hop, the French Revolution and Bonnie and Clyde were just some of the many eclectic themes explored in this year's end-of-year fashion show by students at City of Bristol College.
Held on 25 June 2009 in St Paul's Church, Bedminster, the show was hosted and fully organised by students completing their National Diploma in Fashion and Clothing. Each student researched, created and designed their outfits, all inspired for the future from the past. Influences spanned from the Fifties Festival of Britain, via Sixties Warhol, through the energy of Seventies Punk to the glamour of the Eighties, Galliano and Dynasty.
Additional themes explored on the course included Domestic Bliss, which saw students experiment with constructed textiles, knit and crochet. For their final project, each student chose their own individual themes, which were evident in the striking combination of outfits on display.
Against a backdrop of dramatically energetic music, the catwalk displays were complemented by performances from students studying dance at the College.
"We're very proud of our students who have worked incredibly hard to make the show such a success," said Trudie Hawkins, Programme Co-Ordinator, National Diploma in Fashion and Clothing at City of Bristol College.
"Organising the show formed part of their final project and they have overseen every element of the performance, from enlisting the help of friends and family as models to booking the venue and organising dancers and music. The experience will stand them in good stead as they embark on their next step towards a career in fashion."
Students completing their course this year will either be setting up their own businesses within the fashion industry or continuing their studies into higher education through a range of disciplines within fashion, including design, textiles and fashion promotion.
An intensive two-year course, City of Bristol College's National Diploma in Fashion and Clothing covers practical skills associated with design and garment construction, and students are encouraged to develop their own creative style.
