Husband and wife golf captains Dave and Mandy Wookey of The Bristol Golf Club in Almondsbury have ended their year of captaincy by handing over a cheque for £9,804 to the charity Help for Heroes; added to £1,717.50 already donated to the same cause in 2011 that makes a total of £11,521.50 raised by the couple.
The Bristol Golf Club’s 2011-12 Captains have many connections with servicemen and women currently serving in the armed forces and so decided to make Help for Heroes the selected charity for their year in charge at the club.
During the year Dave and Mandy, with the support of Competitions Secretary Adrian Kidd and Social Secretary Carolyn Park, organised a number of events to raise funds for the cause. These included a 72-hole Challenge in which Dave Wookey with three other low-handicap players played 72 holes of golf, teeing off at 6.00AM and not finishing until 8.00PM, raising £1,347 for the charity.
A three-month weight loss competition saw 32 members of the club take part in the Biggest Loser Slimming Challenge; the winning team, Parkeys Porkies, lost a total of 19 kilos between them with one team member dropping from a size 18 to a size 14. While club members lost pounds their cause gained them, £2,882 to be exact.
Money was also raised at four charity golf days, from people who hit their balls into the lake at the 18th hole, various social events and from collection boxes in the bar.
The club’s General Manager, Ben Laing, has thanked Dave and Mandy for their hard work, commenting that they had “been fantastic captains and an inspiration to us all at the club. They have raised a tremendous amount of money for Help for Heroes – a cause very much at the forefront of all our minds.”
The Bristol Golf Club features a challenging 18-hole championship course and a nine-hole academy course plus a teaching academy, golf shop, restaurant, bar and function rooms.
