Bristol IT Company SpiderGroup launched Tech Talks in November 2011 with the aim of getting businesses excited about technology. As founder James Cook prepares for Tech Talks 2, he tells us how and why he came up with the idea:
“At SpiderGroup, we’ve been organising events since May 2011. We originally wanted to help small businesses understand Cloud Computing. Not only did we get a great response, but we really enjoyed them. I could see that it was helping business owners to understand the Cloud and so we decided to extend this and help businesses understand other aspects of technology.
Technology is evolving constantly and there is always some new tool to help businesses. However, we found that most business owners find them hard to keep up with, often not knowing where to start. And so Tech Talks was born.
Tech Talks invites 3 speakers to talk for 20 minutes on an area of technology to give business owners a deeper insight. I believe this format helps people to retain information, for they aren’t simply reading or listening; but both. People got really involved in the first Tech Talks, they were tweeting, taking notes, and able to get immediate answers to their questions during a Q&A with the panel. This involvement really helps business owners to understand the topics as well as implement them when they leave.”
Tech Talks #1 saw over 100 people register and James expects a similar reaction to his second event: “We were quite over-whelmed by the response to Tech Talks and the feedback was excellent. There was no doubt at all that not only would we create another event, but that we would organise a whole series of Tech Talks, and in fact we have already lined up 2 speakers for Tech Talks 3 in April.”
The topics at Tech Talks 2 are: Mobile App Strategies; Developer Anarchy; and Opportunities in Data. One of the speakers is travelling from London to speak.
Bristol is already one of the six science cities in the UK and it seems there is a growing interest in science and technology. James Cook says: “I’ve been in the industry since I left university in 2002 and thanks to social media and popular companies like Apple, technology has become a topic of real interest. It’s not just IT people who are interested, it’s business people; employees; just about anyone. It has changed the way we live, that’s why Tech Talks is such a popular event, and one which we’re sticking to”
