Keen writers from Bristol and further afield have just over two months left to submit their entries for the 2012 Bristol Short Story Prize; the closing date is 31 March.
The Bristol Short Story Prize was founded in 2007 by the editors of the quarterly cultural magazine Bristol Review of Books. Discovering previously unpublished writers is central to the aims of the prize along with celebrating the short story genre and making it accessible and available to as wide an audience as possible.
The international competition is open to all UK and non UK writers over the age of 16, the story can be on any theme or subject and entry can be made online or by post. Entries must be previously unpublished with a maximum length of 3,000 words. Authors may submit as many stories as they like but each must be accompanied by a £7 entry fee.
Twenty writers will be chosen to form a final shortlist; they will all have their stories published in the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume Five. The overall winner will receive a cash prize of £1,000 and a Waterstones gift card for £150; their story will also be published in the Bristol Review of Books and Venue magazine.
The second prize winner will receive £700 and a £100 Waterstones gift card and the third prize winner will get £400 and a £100 gift card. The remaining 17 shortlisted writers will each receive £100. In 2011 Emily Bullock won the competition with her short story My Girl.
