Description:
Bristol City Council (BCC) has apologised for painting over a mural in Stokes Croft. The piece, created by local street artists Cheo and 3Dom, was originally painted on the frontage of a local building with the permission of the building's owner.See our original report here
According to the council, the piece was obscured by workers after a local resident had complained that the mural made the area feel ‘depressed and run-down'. The council has admitted that it was at fault for failing to seek the permission of the London-based owner of the building before covering up the piece.
The People's Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC), a local action group who are active in supporting the flourishing street art community in the area, had previously accused BCC of ‘vandalism', and claim that the council was aware that permission had been given to the artists to paint the mural. They had asked people who objected to the removal of the piece to contact Jan Ormanroyd, the chief executive of BCC. It is believed Ms Ormanroyd received a number of emails complaining about the council's actions.
