Jo Simmons reviews Shaun the Sheep Shaun's Big Show, playing at Bristol Hippodrome until Saturday 20 August
Shaun’s Big Show is a fantastic music and dance extravaganza that is perfect for anyone over the age of three years. The show opened at the Bristol Hippodrome yesterday and runs until Saturday 20 August.
This is a live show, featuring Aardman Animation favourite Shaun the Sheep, his friends Bitzer, Shirley and Timmy and the rest of the flock. The show has been adapted for the stage from the BAFTA award-winning BBC family favourite by David Wood, National Children’s Dramatist, and features stunning choreography by Bill Deamer.
From the very first dance number you know that Shaun the Sheep’s Big Show is going to be good. When you take your kids to see things like this you are never quite sure if you are going to enjoy it yourself as it is, well, for kids! Another worry for parents is that the youngsters will get tired at the interval and want to go home. There should be no such fears with Shaun’s Big Show. My son Henry and I were clapping and whooping along with the rest of the audience from the off.
Every dance genre is covered from the moment Shaun & Co bound on to the stage. Ballet, tap, an Irish jig and even a bit of Cossack dancing all make great appearances.
The sets and costumes were spot on but you knew this being adapted from an Aardman production that this would be the case. The farmer and the farmer’s niece were particular highlights of the show for me.
The troublesome pigs dressing up in silver costumes and doing the YMCA got the most laughs from the Bristol Hippodrome audience and rightly so – they were just hilarious.
Brilliant choreography, tons of laughs and disco dancing sheep make Shaun’s Big Show a real treat, so if you want a fun night out for all the family then I highly recommend this production – frankly, it’s Baaa-rilliant!
