Bristol University is one of the leading universities in the UK. It ranks in the top ten universities in most league tables, and receives more applications per place than any other university. It attracts a variety of students, but is often considered an alternative to Oxbridge, and around a third of the students come from independent schools. Around 23,000 students attend the University of Bristol.
The University has a campus that extends across Clifton, and many buildings around the Whiteladies Road area belong to the University. It is the largest independent employer in Bristol. Its most iconic building is the Wills Memorial Building which stands on Park Street.
The university has six faculties – Arts, Engineering, Science, Medical and Veterinary Sciences, Medicine and Dentistry and Social Sciences and Law. Bristol University is considered to be particularly strong in the areas of Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biological Sciences, Mathematics and Psychology. It is also highly regarded for Economics, Finance and Management Studies. The University also has an excellent Research reputation.
Bristol University boasts an excellent social life for students, and its Union Building, which houses student radio station BURST and the offices of student newspaper Epigram, is claimed to be the largest in the country. The building on Queen’s Road is used regularly as a music venue for touring artists. Student accommodation is found in the areas of Clifton and Stoke Bishop.
