The area is mainly divided either side of Ashley Down Road, the main thoroughfare for the area.  Due to the affordable housing and location, close to both the City Centre and University of West of England Campus, the area is favoured by students and young professionals. The City of Bristol College is located on Ashley Down Road and has benefited recently from a £25 million re-development, creating an urban-village environment.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is situated in Nevil Road on the border between Ashley Down and Bishopston, in fact up until 1975the ground was known as The Ashley Down Ground.

Schools in Ashley Down include Ashley Down Infant School on Olveston Road and Ashley Down Junior School located on Downend Road.
