BIG BROTHER WEEK 1
It always takes a little while to get a feel for the housemates, you need time to figure out whose side you're on. Last year I thought Rex was cool for three whole weeks - I know, it doesn't bear thinking about.
With this example of unreliable first impressions in mind I prepared to watch the first few days of BB 10 with an open mind, to dispense much benefit of the doubt with great generosity - possibly drawing admiring glances from my companions - maybe even a round of applause.
However I just cannot believe what a paranoid psycho that Sophia is. Putting aside the threats and accusations ('I know it was you that stole my drink' followed by a 'Just joking!' so insincere it's sinister), no-one can have missed the baffling feud she has cultivated with Saffia. Now it seems to me that Saffia is being a great sport, offering generosity and understanding. I'm impressed.
I'm also a bit impressed by Angel - she seems promisingly intense, I just hope her obvious thoughtfulness doesn't lead to a walk out. I would love to see how she adapts to the housemates in week 9 once Kris and Dogface have shacked up and Sree has reached even more profound levels of incoherence.
But really everyone seems inoffensive enough. Siavash seems strangely inclined to envelop Marcus or Cairon in a tender embrace at any flimsy opportunity. Lisa seems keen to make everyone act like a troop of 9 year old girls. 'Lets make up a routine to the Spice Girls!' she enthuses, or 'Let's play catwalk!, comprising of nothing more than doing a funny walk up and down some decking - what the hell was that about?
And finally, poor departed Benazir, the giver of the dullest BB eviction interview of all time. I did get the impression that she might actually be quite interesting but it seems early Shabazz type behaviour (towering over everyone and engaging in the smallest of small talk at a booming volume) alienated her in the eyes of public. Still, we got to see a London bus driving very slowly around some empty streets; and if that's not quality entertainment, I don't know what is.
