Weekend sports results for Bristol

Newcastle 0 Bristol City 0

Over 43,000 were at St James' Park to watch one of the most entertaining goalless draws there is likely to be and the rumoured 2,800 City fans were in fine voice despite the long trip up north. It's been 99 years since City have won at Newcastle and last minute goalkeeper Dean Gerken, called up after Adriano Basso had a groin strain during the warm up, ensured the City goal was not breached. This display might see him keep hold of the keepers shirt for a while.

City have a 2 week break now before their next fixture - click for details of Bristol City v Peterborough on Saturday 17th October.

Norwich 5 Bristol Rovers 1

Bristol Rovers remain 3rd despite this mauling at Carrow Road. Things didn't look great as Norwich went one up in the first 10 minutes of the game when Chris Martin hit in a 25 yard free kick. Rovers were given a penalty in the 26th minute and Jeff Hughes stepped up and put away the equaliser, then it all went wrong!

Byron Anthony impeded Wes Hoolahan who scored the penalty awarded and then Grant Holt grabbed a brace before half time, suddently Rovers weere 4-1 down. The second half was a more even affair but the ex Rovers player Jamie Cureton rubbed salt in the wound with a 96th minute strike for the Canaries 5th goal.

Next Saturday see the once might Leeds United travel down to the Memorial Stadium. For details of the game click Bristol Rovers v Leeds United

Bristol Rugby 26 Exeter Chiefs 35

The unbeaten run and leadership of the Championship are both over for Bristol Rugby following this home defeat by Exeter Chiefs. Despite fighting back from 23-6 down to 23-23 Bristol were unable to finish off the job and mistakes gifted Exeter the game when a defensive line out was spilled allowing Simon Alcott to grab the last try and with Gareth Steenson adding the conversion even the bonus point was gone. This I am sure is the wake up call Bristol needed, it was never going to be plain sailing to get back into the Guinness Premiership but I am still surethey can do it. The premiership highlights on ITV on Sundays aren't the same without Bristol in them.

Bristol Rugby travel to Cornish Pirates next Sunday, 11th October in what is sure to be another Stern test for Paull Hull and his team.
